Chapter 3 introduced the nature of statistical significance testing in the social sciences. This chapter serves as a counterpoint to that discussion, introducing contemporary developments in statistical thinking. Whereas many readers no doubt experienced the previous chapter as a recap of material that has been presented in some form in almost all elementary statistics courses, this chapter contains both extensions and challenges to traditional thinking about statistics. Most of these ideas are not new, but traditional beliefs about hypothesis testing are so well ingrained in the social science community that divergent perspectives are only now beginning to make a substantial impact on research practice.
